Selman Waksman

Medical Scientists, Physiologists and Pharmacologists

Selman Waksman was a Ukrainian-American biochemist and microbiologist at Rutgers University who coined the term antibiotic and led the laboratory whose systematic screening of soil microorganisms produced streptomycin, isolated by his doctoral student Albert Schatz in 1943, the first drug effective against tuberculosis. Waksman received sole public credit and the 1952 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery; Schatz's role, and Waksman's own handling of the resulting patent royalties, became a documented and litigated dispute this atlas already records on the Discovery of Streptomycin entity's own discoverer fact.
