Stanisław Ostrowski

Generalist and Primary Care Physicians

Stanisław Ostrowski was a Polish physician and politician, born in Lemberg (Lwów) in 1892 and died in London in 1982. He studied medicine at Lwów University and served as a physician with the Polish Army during the Polish-Ukrainian War of 1918 and the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1919 to 1920. He then entered municipal and national politics, becoming Vice Mayor and later the last Polish Mayor of Lwów, and sitting three terms in the Sejm, where he concentrated on health affairs and defended the rights of minorities. After the Soviet invasion of 1939 he was imprisoned in Moscow until an amnesty in 1942, and in 1944 and 1945 he again worked as a physician in military hospitals during the Italian campaign. In exile in England he became the third President of Poland in exile, serving from 1972 to 1979.
