Samuel Thomas von Sömmerring was a German medical doctor, anatomist, anthropologist, paleontologist and inventor, born on 28 January 1755 and died on 2 March 1830. He discovered the macula in the retina of the human eye. His investigations of the brain and the nervous system, the sensory organs, the embryo and its malformations, and the structure of the lungs, among other subjects, made him one of the most important German anatomists. The same source also describes him as an anthropologist, a paleontologist and an inventor, so his work reached beyond anatomy proper.
