Carl Garré

Surgeons and Perioperative Specialists

Carl Garré (full name Carl Alois Philipp Garrè, 1857 to 1928) was a Swiss surgeon born at Ragaz who trained under Robert Koch and Theodor Kocher. After studying medicine at Bern and Leipzig and taking his doctorate in 1883, he became an assistant to August Socin at Basel, where he lectured in surgery and bacteriology from 1886, then became an associate professor at Tübingen in 1889 and a full professor at Rostock from 1894 and at Bonn from 1907 to 1926. He is remembered for showing that Staphylococcus aureus causes carbuncles and boils, a result he reached by experimenting on himself, and a chronic bone inflammation with thickening of the outer bone layer, sclerosing osteomyelitis, carries his name. He died at Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife in 1928.
