Gero Hütter, born in 1968, is a German hematologist. He is known for the case of Timothy Ray Brown, a patient with leukemia who was also infected with human immunodeficiency virus. Hütter and his medical team transplanted bone marrow that lacked a key HIV receptor into this patient. Afterwards the amount of HIV circulating in the patient's blood fell to undetectable levels. The case was widely reported in the media. The Berlin newspaper Berliner Morgenpost named Hütter one of the Berliners of the year for 2008. This entry records what the source states about his career and the transplant; it is a historical account and not medical advice.
