Konrad Viktor Schneider was a German physician and anatomist, born in Bitterfeld in 1614 and dying in Wittenberg on 10 August 1680. He studied at the University of Wittenberg and in 1636 became a professor of medicine at the University of Jena. Two years later he went back to Wittenberg, where in June 1640 he was appointed professor of anatomy and botany. Between 1660 and 1662 he published De catarrhis, a work in several volumes in which he refuted the long-held belief that nasal mucus was a secretion of the brain. His name survives in the eponym Schneiderian membrane, another name for the nasal mucosa, so his work is remembered in the vocabulary of anatomy and of the study of the nose.
