Andreas Röschlaub

Traditional and Historical Medicine Practitioners

Andreas Röschlaub was a German medical doctor, born in Lichtenfels, Bavaria, on 21 October 1768 and dying on 7 July 1835. He studied medicine at the universities of Würzburg and Bamberg and took his doctorate at Bamberg in 1795. In 1798 he became a full professor of pathology at Bamberg, moved in 1802 to the Ludwig Maximilian University at Landshut, where he directed the medical school, and in 1826 moved with the university to Munich as professor of medicine. He edited the Magazin zur Vervollkommnung der theoretischen und praktischen Heilkunde and wrote a textbook on the classification of diseases, the Lehrbuch der Nosologie. He is remembered for the Erregbarkeitstheorie, or excitability theory, a modification of Brownianism, the speculative medical theory first formulated by the Scottish physician John Brown (1735 to 1788).
