Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig (1816 to 1895) was a German physician and physiologist whose research and teaching shaped the understanding, methods and apparatus of almost every branch of physiology. He became a professor of physiology in 1842 and of comparative anatomy in 1846, taught in Zurich and Vienna, and from 1865 built up the Physiological Institute at the University of Leipzig, which now bears his name. His investigations covered the physiology of blood pressure, urinary excretion and anesthesia, and he is credited with inventing the stromuhr. He received the Copley Medal in 1884 and in 1869 was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Since 1932 the German Society for Cardiology has awarded the Carl Ludwig Honorary Medal to outstanding researchers in cardiovascular science.
