Heinrich Adolf von Bardeleben

Surgeons and Perioperative Specialists

Heinrich Adolf von Bardeleben (1819 to 1895) was a German surgeon and university teacher. Born in Frankfurt on the Oder, he studied medicine at Heidelberg, Giessen, Paris and Berlin and took his doctorate in 1841 with a thesis on the structure of the glands that have no excretory duct. He became an associate professor at Giessen in 1848 and in 1849 a full professor of surgery at Greifswald, and in 1868 he returned to Berlin, where he worked at the Charite until his death and served as rector of the university in 1876 and 1877. He is credited as one of the first surgeons to bring Joseph Lister's antiseptic treatment of wounds to continental Europe, and he served as army chief physician in the wars of 1866 and 1870 to 1871. His textbook of surgery and operative technique appeared in many editions between 1852 and 1882.
