Edwin Theodor Saemisch

Surgeons and Perioperative Specialists

Edwin Theodor Saemisch was a German ophthalmologist, born in Luckau in 1833 and dying in Bonn in 1909. He took his medical doctorate at the University of Berlin in 1858 and then served as an assistant to Albrecht von Graefe in Berlin and to Alexander Pagenstecher in Wiesbaden. In 1867 he became an associate professor at the University of Bonn and in 1873 a full professor. He specialized in diseases of the eye, particularly those of the conjunctiva, sclera and cornea, and is credited with describing vernal conjunctivitis and the serpiginous corneal ulcer known as ulcus serpens corneae, which still carries his name as Saemisch ulcer, along with an operation for hypopyon ulcer. With Alfred Carl Graefe he edited the multi-volume Handbuch der gesammten Augenheilkunde, a standard manual of ophthalmology issued in several editions.
