Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran

Immunologists and Infectious Disease Specialists

French army physician and parasitologist. Serving with the French Army Medical Corps in Constantine, Algeria, Laveran examined the blood of a malaria patient under a microscope on November 6, 1880, and observed moving, flagella-like structures emerging from pigmented bodies inside red blood cells, becoming the first person to identify a protozoan parasite as the cause of a human disease. His finding met skepticism for several years before wider acceptance. He was awarded the 1907 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the role of protozoa in disease.
