Alexander Tietze was a German surgeon, born in Liebenau, after whom Tietze syndrome is named. He received his doctorate at the University of Breslau in 1887 and from 1888 to 1895 worked as an assistant at the Breslau surgical clinic, where he trained under Jan Mikulicz-Radecki. He gained his habilitation in 1894 and in 1896 became a primary physician at the Allerheiligen Hospital in Breslau. From 1914 to 1920 he sat on the Breslau City Council. His best known written work is a highly regarded textbook on emergency surgery, published in 1927, the year of his death; he also wrote on injuries to the cranial nerves and on surgery of the rectum and anus.
