Heinrich Albers-Schönberg was a German internist and radiologist, born in Hamburg on 21 January 1865 and dying there on 4 June 1921. The International Society for the History of Radiology calls him the Nestor of German Roentgenology, a title that marks him as the senior figure of early X-ray medicine in Germany. He was among the first scientists to explore the clinical possibilities of X-rays, at a time when the technique was only newly discovered. In 1897 he co-founded the journal Fortschritte auf dem Gebiet der Röntgenstrahlen, which is still published, and in 1905 he was the initiator and a co-founder of the Deutsche Röntgengesellschaft, the German Roentgen Society. In 1919 he was appointed the first professor of radiology in Germany.
