Georg Haas was a German physician, born on 4 April 1886 in Nuremberg, who died on 6 December 1971. He is recorded as the doctor who performed the first hemodialysis treatment on a human patient, that is, the filtering of a patient's blood outside the body when the kidneys cannot do the work. Haas studied medicine at the universities of Munich and Freiburg. He wrote his doctoral thesis while attending the institute of the well known pathologist Ludwig Aschoff, which places his training within the German pathology tradition of the early twentieth century. The source article is short and gives no further detail about his later career, so this entry records only what its opening passage states and does not extend it.
