Sir Bernard Katz was a German-born British physician and biophysicist, born on 26 March 1911 and died on 20 April 2003. He is noted for his work on nerve physiology, and specifically for his studies of synaptic transmission at the nerve-muscle junction. In 1970 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Julius Axelrod and Ulf von Euler, and he had been made a Knight Bachelor the year before, in 1969. The letters FRS after his name in the cited article show that he was a Fellow of the Royal Society. This record draws only on the opening summary of that article and does not attempt to describe the experiments behind his prize.
