Horst Fischer (31 December 1912 to 8 July 1966) was a German medical doctor born in Dresden who joined the SS and served as a camp physician at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp from November 1942. He took part in selections of prisoners, at least 70,000 of whom he selected to be gassed, and supervised the gassings. Arrested by East German secret police officials in 1965, he was tried directly before the Supreme Court of East Germany, found guilty of crimes against humanity, condemned to death and executed by guillotine in Leipzig in 1966. He was the highest-ranking concentration camp doctor ever tried before a German court.
