Karl Maria Herrligkoffer was a German medical doctor, born on 13 June 1916 in Schweinfurt and dead on 9 September 1991 in Munich, who between 1953 and 1986 organized and directed numerous German and Austrian mountaineering expeditions. They included thirteen expeditions to five of the highest peaks of the Himalayas and Karakoram, among them Nanga Parbat, Everest, K2 and Broad Peak, and two expeditions to east Greenland. His expeditions gave many mountaineers, including Reinhold Messner, Doug Scott and Hermann Buhl, their first experience of the greater ranges. Several of them produced controversy and in some cases legal action between him and other participants. He appears in the Medicine Atlas as a physician whose public career lay in expedition leadership.
