Matthias Rath (1955 to 2026) was a German doctor, businessman and vitamin salesman who earned his medical degree in Germany. He claimed that a program of nutritional supplements, which he called cellular medicine and which included formulations that he sold, could treat or cure diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and HIV/AIDS; these claims are not supported by reliable medical research. He ran the Dr. Rath Health Foundation and founded the Dr. Rath Research Institute. His claims about HIV/AIDS drew wide criticism in South Africa, where in 2008 the Cape High Court found his unauthorised clinical trials unlawful and banned him and his foundation from conducting such trials and advertising their products.
