George McClellan was an American surgeon, born on 22 December 1796 in Woodstock, Connecticut, who founded the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He studied at Yale, trained in medicine with Thomas Hubbard and then in Philadelphia under John Syng Dorsey, and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1819. After giving private anatomy lectures, he obtained a charter in 1825 for a new medical school linked to Jefferson College, and it opened in 1826 with McClellan lecturing in surgery. He later helped open the Medical Department of Pennsylvania College and wrote a widely used surgical textbook. He was the father of the Civil War general George Brinton McClellan and died on 9 May 1847.
