Maclyn McCarty

Medical Scientists, Physiologists and Pharmacologists

Maclyn McCarty (1911-2005) was an American geneticist known for his role in the Avery-MacLeod-McCarty experiment, which demonstrated that DNA, rather than protein, constitutes the chemical nature of a gene. Working at Rockefeller University for more than six decades, McCarty was, by the time of his death, the last surviving member of the team whose 1944 publication overturned earlier assumptions about heredity and helped found modern molecular genetics. He also studied infectious disease, particularly streptococcal bacteria and rheumatic fever, and received the Wolf Prize in Medicine in 1990.
