Henri Duret (1849 to 1921) was a French neurologist whose work on the circulation of the brain and on the physiology of the brainstem was important in the early years of brain surgery. For thirty years he was associated with the Faculte Libre de Medecine in Lille, where he became dean, and during the First World War he organised and directed Red Cross hospitals. His publications include a monograph on tumours of the brain, Les tumeurs de l encephale, published in 1905, and a major work on injuries of the skull and brain, Traumatismes cranio-cerebraux, published in 1921. An earlier study of experimental and clinical work on brain injury appeared in 1878, and in the same year he published an article in the journal Brain on the role of the dura mater and its nerves in cerebral trauma.
