Mnesitheus

Traditional and Historical Medicine Practitioners

Mnesitheus of Athens was a Greek physician who probably lived in the fourth century BC, since the comic poet Alexis quotes him. He belonged to the Dogmatic school of medicine and enjoyed a great reputation, being especially celebrated for his classification of diseases. He wrote a work on diet, quoted several times by Athenaeus, and another on tippling in which he recommended the practice. Galen mentions him often and in favourable terms, and Rufus of Ephesus, Aulus Gellius, Soranus, Pliny, Plutarch and Oribasius also cite him. His tomb still stood in Attica in the time of Pausanias. A physician of the same name from Cyzicus is a separate person.
