Henri Mondor was a French physician and surgeon who lived from 1885 to 1962. Born in Saint-Cernin in the Cantal region, he rose to become a professor of clinical surgery in Paris and was equally known as a writer and as a historian of French literature and of medicine. His learned standing was recognised by election to the Académie Nationale de Médecine in 1945, the Académie française in 1946 and the Académie des sciences in 1961. His clinical work centred on rectal cancer and on the urgent diagnosis. His name survives in medicine through Mondor's disease, a thrombophlebitis of the superficial veins of the breast and the front of the chest wall, which was named in his honour.
