Eduard Christian Arning (1855 to 1936) was an English-German dermatologist and microbiologist from Manchester. He was educated by private tutors and at the Gelehrtenschule des Johanneums in Hamburg, took his medical doctorate at Strassburg in 1879, and worked as an assistant under Adolf Kussmaul and Oswald Kohts in Strassburg and later under Oskar Lassar in Berlin. From 1884 to 1886 he researched leprosy in the Hawaiian Islands under the sponsorship of King Kalakaua, and is remembered for his studies at the leper colony on Molokai and for his experiments on the contagiousness of the disease, in which he inoculated a convicted prisoner with leprous tissue. In 1887 he became a specialist in dermatology and venereal disease in Hamburg, served from 1906 as physician-in-chief of the skin and venereal department at the Allgemeines Krankenhaus St. Georg, and in 1919 became an associate professor of dermatology at the University of Hamburg. Reproductions of 237 glass-plate photographs he made in Hawaii are held in Honolulu, and an antifungal solution, Arning's tincture, carries his name.
