Georg Groddeck

Psychiatrists and Neurologists

Georg Walther Groddeck (1866 to 1934) was a German physician and writer regarded as a pioneer of psychosomatic medicine. Born in Bad Kösen, Saxony, to a Lutheran family, he published his first book in 1902 and in 1913 issued Nasamecu, a book on the healthy and the sick person whose title abbreviates the Latin motto natura sanat, medicus curat. His 1921 psychoanalytic novel Der Seelensucher was praised by Sigmund Freud, who commended him to the Berlin Psychoanalytic Association, and his 1923 Das Buch vom Es, written as letters to a fictional friend, popularised the idea of the It, which Freud acknowledged as the source of the name Id. Groddeck is often mistaken for an orthodox Freudian but held a different conception of the psyche. The article also notes that his writing before the First World War accepted eugenics and Völkisch movement ideas.
