Gustav Adolf Neuber

Surgeons and Perioperative Specialists

Gustav Adolf Neuber was a German surgeon, born in Tondern, now Tønder, on 24 June 1850 and died on 13 April 1932. He studied medicine at several universities, took his doctorate at the University of Giessen in 1875, and then worked as an assistant to Friedrich von Esmarch at the University Surgical Clinic in Kiel. In 1884 he was the first to propose separate operating rooms for septic and non-septic surgery, stressing complete cleanliness in every aspect of an operation. In 1886 he opened his own private hospital on Königsweg in Kiel, where he applied the modern principles of asepsis, and that clinic is considered the first aseptic hospital in the world. Earlier, in 1879, he developed a decalcified bone tube for draining wounds, and in plastic surgery he introduced a procedure for fat auto-grafting.
