Johann Christian Gottlob Baumgarten

Medical Scientists, Physiologists and Pharmacologists

Johann Christian Gottlob Baumgarten (7 April 1765 to 29 December 1843) was a German medical doctor and botanist, a native of Luckau in Lower Lusatia. He studied at the medical-surgical college in Dresden and then at Leipzig from 1785, where he was a student of Johann Ehrenfried Pohl and published the treatise Flora Lipsiensis in 1790. He took his philosophy degree that year and his medical doctorate in 1791, then continued his studies in Vienna. In 1793 he travelled to Transylvania, where he carried out pioneer investigations of its flora, serving as district medical officer in Leschkirch from 1794 and in Schassburg (today Sighisoara, Romania) from 1801. From 1807 he devoted himself wholly to botanical research, publishing the four-volume Enumeratio stirpium Magno Transsilvaniae principatui between 1816 and 1846. The bellflower Campanula baumgartenii is named after him.
