Justus Christian Loder

Pathologists and Anatomists

Justus Ferdinand Christian Loder was a German anatomist and surgeon, a native of Riga, born on 12 March 1753 and died in Moscow on 16 April 1832. He took his medical doctorate at Göttingen in 1777 and the next year became professor of surgery and anatomy at Jena, where he stayed for a quarter of a century and founded an anatomical theatre and a maternity house. He moved to Halle in 1803 and set up an obstetrics clinic there, then served as personal physician to the Prussian royal family and from 1810 to Tsar Alexander I, and ran the military hospital in Moscow from 1814 to 1817. His Tabulae anatomicae, published between 1794 and 1803, was among the largest anatomical atlases of its time, and Goethe and Hufeland were among those who learned anatomy from him.
