Karl Brandt (1904 to 1948) was a German physician and Schutzstaffel officer in Nazi Germany. Born in Mülhausen in Alsace-Lorraine, he became a medical doctor and surgeon in 1928, specializing in head and spinal injuries. He joined the Nazi Party in 1932 and from August 1934 served as Adolf Hitler's escort doctor. Chosen by Philipp Bouhler to run the Aktion T4 euthanasia program, he was later appointed Reich Commissioner of Health and Emergency Services. His medical ethics, shaped by the ideas of Alfred Hoche, placed the supposed health of society above the lives of disabled and ill people. Accused of human experimentation and other war crimes, he was tried with twenty-two others before a United States military tribunal in the Doctors' Trial, found guilty, sentenced to death and executed on 2 June 1948. His record is part of the history of medical ethics.
