Jacques-René Tenon

Surgeons and Perioperative Specialists

Jacques-René Tenon (1724 to 1816) was a French surgeon, born in Sépeaux in northern Burgundy, who became one of the leading voices for hospital reform in the second half of the eighteenth century. Trained in Paris as the son and grandson of surgeons, he served as a military surgeon in the War of the Austrian Succession, then became principal surgeon at the Salpêtrière hospital, where he taught students, promoted smallpox inoculation and studied mercury poisoning among hat makers. In 1788 he published the Mémoire sur les hôpitaux de Paris, a detailed account of hygiene, patient care, staffing and record keeping prepared when the Academy of Sciences assessed plans to rebuild the Hôtel-Dieu. The treatise stayed influential in Europe for more than a century. He was later elected to the Legislative Assembly and chaired its committee on public relief.
