Sanduk Ruit is a Nepali ophthalmologist who has helped restore the sight of more than 250,000 people in North America, Africa and Asia through small-incision cataract surgery and phacoemulsification. Born on 4 September 1954 in the remote mountain village of Olangchunggola in northeast Nepal, he trained in medicine at King George's Medical College in Lucknow. He is the founder and executive director of the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in Kathmandu, which manufactures intraocular lenses for implantation at a fraction of their former cost and so has made cataract surgery cheaper in Nepal. His work earned him the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Peace and International Understanding, cited for placing Nepal at the forefront of safe, effective and economical cataract surgery, and Bahrain's ISA award for affordable and sustainable ways to cure cataracts in the developing world.
