Heinrich Sylvester Theodor Tiling

Medical Scientists, Physiologists and Pharmacologists

Heinrich Sylvester Theodor Tiling (1818 to 1871) was a Russian and American physician and naturalist. Born in Livonia, he studied medicine at Dorpat and took his doctorate in 1844. He then travelled overland to Ayan on the Sea of Okhotsk as surgeon to the Russian-American Company, where his medical duties left him time to keep daily weather records, probably the earliest systematic ones in eastern Siberia, and to collect and describe the local plants. He later practised in Riga and Wenden, served as a surgeon in Sitka, Alaska from 1863 to 1868, and ended his life in Nevada City, California. He published an account of his voyage and, with Eduard von Regel, a flora of the Ayan region, and more than twenty plant species were named in his honour.
