It is an old science with beginnings in prehistoric times, and it is closely tied to developmental biology, embryology, comparative anatomy, evolutionary biology and phylogeny. Human anatomy is one of the essential basic sciences applied in medicine and is usually studied alongside physiology, which examines the function of the same structures. The discipline divides into macroscopic or gross anatomy, the examination of body parts by unaided eyesight, and microscopic anatomy, which uses optical instruments to study tissues, known as histology, and cells. Its history is a progressive understanding of how the organs and structures of the human body work, with methods advancing from dissection of animal carcasses and human cadavers to twentieth century imaging such as X-ray, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging.FactsAnatomyConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOrigin PeriodWell-attestedprehistoric times 1AnatomyFilter Results60 entriesHealing TraditionAllAnatomists and Physiologists of Antiquity and the Renaissance (4)Military, Public Health and Reform Surgeons (2)Neurologists and Biological Psychiatry Pioneers (2)Neurosurgeons and Specialist Surgeons of the Head, Eye, Skin and Joints (1)Physicians of Antiquity, the Medieval World and the Renaissance (1)Physiologists, Anatomists and Natural Historians of Medicine (46)Surgeons of Antiquity, the Islamic World and Early Modern Europe (3)Era (Birth Year)All-335 (1)1162 (1)1530 (1)1558 (1)1581 (1)1589 (1)1603 (1)1614 (1)1638 (1)1640 (1)1657 (1)1670 (1)1688 (1)1693 (1)1697 (1)1704 (1)1710 (1)1724 (1)1736 (1)1739 (2)1755 (1)1759 (1)1768 (1)1770 (1)1771 (2)1776 (2)1780 (2)1783 (1)1789 (1)1793 (2)1801 (1)1804 (1)1806 (1)1807 (1)1809 (1)1810 (1)1811 (1)1814 (1)1817 (1)1820 (1)1825 (1)1829 (1)1834 (1)1835 (1)1844 (1)1846 (1)1847 (1)1849 (1)1855 (1)1862 (1)1863 (1)1864 (1)1865 (1)1868 (1)1881 (1)1898 (1)Profession/RoleAllAnatomists and Physiologists of Antiquity and the Renaissance (4)Military, Public Health and Reform Surgeons (2)Neurologists and Biological Psychiatry Pioneers (2)Neurosurgeons and Specialist Surgeons of the Head, Eye, Skin and Joints (1)Physicians of Antiquity, the Medieval World and the Renaissance (1)Physiologists, Anatomists and Natural Historians of Medicine (46)Surgeons of Antiquity, the Islamic World and Early Modern Europe (3)NationalityAllArgentina (1)Austria (1)Austria-Hungary (1)Denmark (2)England (1)France (4)Germany (37)Greece (1)Holy Roman Empire (1)Iraq (1)Italy (3)Russian Empire (1)Scotland (1)Switzerland (3)United Kingdom (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 60Abd al-Latif al-BaghdadiAnatomyAlbert von KöllikerAnatomyAlexander Monro PrimusAnatomyAlfred Wilhelm VolkmannAnatomyAndré du LaurensAnatomyAnthony CarlisleAnatomyAntoine FerreinAnatomyAugust HirtAnatomyAugustin Friedrich WaltherAnatomyBelsazar HacquetAnatomyBenedict StillingAnatomyCarl Caspar von SieboldAnatomyCarl Ernst BockAnatomyChristoph Theodor AebyAnatomyEduard WeberAnatomyEmil ZuckerkandlAnatomyErnst GauppAnatomyFrançois Carlo AntommarchiAnatomyFranz Kaspar HesselbachAnatomyFriedrich Christian RosenthalAnatomyGaspare AselliAnatomyGeorg ThileniusAnatomyGotthelf Fischer von WaldheimAnatomyGustav Albert SchwalbeAnatomyHeinrich August WrisbergAnatomyHeinrich Meibom (doctor)AnatomyHeinrich Müller (physiologist)AnatomyHenry TonksAnatomyHermann KlaatschAnatomyHerophilosAnatomyIgnaz DöllingerAnatomyJean-Joseph SueAnatomyJohann BeringerAnatomyJohann Christian RosenmüllerAnatomyJohann Friedrich Meckel, the ElderAnatomyJohann Friedrich von EschscholtzAnatomyJohann Georg WirsungAnatomyJohannes BohnAnatomyJosé ArceAnatomyKarl August von BergenAnatomyKarl Bogislaus ReichertAnatomyKarl Theodor Ernst von SieboldAnatomyKarl Wilhelm von KupfferAnatomyKonrad Johann Martin LangenbeckAnatomyKonrad Viktor SchneiderAnatomyLeonardo BotalloAnatomyLudwig EdingerAnatomyLudwig Heinrich BojanusAnatomyLudwig Lewin JacobsonAnatomyMartin HeidenhainAnatomyMartin RathkeAnatomyMax FürbringerAnatomyMax SchultzeAnatomyMichael Bernhard ValentiniAnatomyOtto DeitersAnatomyPaul FlechsigAnatomyPhilipp Friedrich Theodor MeckelAnatomySimon PaulliAnatomyTheodor Ludwig Wilhelm von BischoffAnatomyWenzel GruberAnatomyConnectionsNotable SpecialistsMartin Rathke, Healers Well-attested Source Martin Rathke (Wikipedia)Max Fürbringer, Healers Well-attested Source Max Fürbringer (Deutsche Biographie)Max Schultze, Healers Well-attested Source Max Schultze (source article)Michael Bernhard Valentini, Healers Well-attested Source Michael Bernhard Valentini (source article)Otto Deiters, Healers Well-attested Source Otto Deiters (Wikipedia)Paul Flechsig, Healers Well-attested Source Paul Flechsig (Wikipedia)Philipp Friedrich Theodor Meckel, Healers Well-attested Source Philipp Friedrich Theodor Meckel (Wikipedia)Simon Paulli, Healers Well-attested Source Simon Paulli (Wikipedia)Theodor Ludwig Wilhelm von Bischoff, Healers Well-attested Source Theodor Ludwig Wilhelm von Bischoff (Wikipedia)Wenzel Gruber, Healers Well-attested Source Wenzel Gruber (Wikipedia)Showing 51 to 60 of 60 in Notable Specialists, page 2 of 2.← Previous12Sources1.
