Carl Anton Ewald

Generalist and Primary Care Physicians

Carl Anton Ewald (1845 to 1915) was a German physician and gastroenterologist, a native of Berlin and the brother of the physiologist Ernst Julius Richard Ewald. He took his medical doctorate in Berlin in 1870 and became an assistant to the pathologist Friedrich Theodor von Frerichs. In 1888 he was appointed head physician of the department of internal medicine at the Augusta Hospital in Berlin, which under him became a centre for pathological studies of digestion. He is remembered for his investigations of gastric secretions and for introducing intubation as an aid to gastric analysis; the Ewald tube, a gastric tube used to empty the contents of the stomach, is named after him. With Ismar Isidor Boas he developed a standard test meal for gastric analysis. He published The Diseases of the Stomach and Lectures on Digestion, both translated into English, edited the Berliner klinische Wochenschrift for many years and served as librarian of the Berlin Medical Society.
