Karl Landsteiner was an Austrian physician and immunologist who in 1900 and 1901, working in Vienna, discovered that mixing blood from different people could cause red blood cells to clump together, and identified the underlying A, B and O blood groups this depends on, the basis of the ABO blood group system that made safe blood transfusion possible. He later co-discovered the Rh blood factor in 1937 with Alexander Wiener. He received the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Facts
FAQs
How did Karl Landsteiner's discoveries make safe blood transfusion possible?
He distinguished the main blood groups, and later identified the Rhesus factor with Alexander S. Wiener.
Landsteiner, an Austrian-American physician and immunologist, distinguished the main blood groups and developed the modern system of classifying them from his identification of agglutinins in the blood. In 1937, with Alexander S. Wiener, he identified the Rhesus factor, which enabled physicians to transfuse blood without endangering the patient's life. He received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930 and has been described as the father of transfusion medicine.
