Archibald Dalzel was a British doctor, slave trader and colonial administrator, born about 1740 in Kirkliston, the son of a local carpenter. He trained in medicine in Edinburgh and served as a naval surgeon in the Royal Navy before going to West Africa in 1763 as a surgeon for the African Company of Merchants, where he began trading in enslaved people to add to his salary. He governed Whydah and later served as governor of the Committee of Merchants of the Gold Coast between 1792 and 1802. In 1793 he published The History of Dahomy, a proslavery history that defended the Atlantic slave trade, and in 1804 and 1805 he bought slave ships.
