Douglas Ousterhout is a retired American craniofacial surgeon who practiced in San Francisco, California. He holds both medical and dental degrees from the University of Michigan and has been a voluntary clinical professor of surgery in the medical school and an adjunct professor of dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco. His earlier practice was reconstructing faces and skulls damaged by birth defects, accidents or other trauma. When a plastic surgeon asked him in 1982 to help a trans woman whose face led others to treat her as a man, he studied early twentieth century physical anthropology, derived measurements from cephalograms and tested them against several hundred skulls, and then adapted his existing techniques to develop most of the procedures now grouped as facial feminization surgery. He also pioneered facial masculinization surgery, edited the 1991 book Aesthetic Contouring of the Craniofacial Skeleton, and was widely considered the foremost facial feminization surgeon in the United States.
