Gunther O. Hofmann

Gunther O. Hofmann is a German surgeon, biophysicist and professor, born in Landshut, Bavaria, in May 1957. He earned a state medical examination and a medical doctorate at LMU Munich, then a doctorate in physics at the Technical University of Munich in 1984. After research at LMU Klinikum and at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston during his habilitation, he moved in 1995 to the BG Trauma Hospital in Murnau. Since 2004 he has been medical director of the Bergmannstrost trauma clinics in Halle and director of the Hospital for Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. His research covers implants for osteosynthesis and joint replacement, bone and joint grafting, biomaterials, biomechanics, computer-assisted surgery and bone and joint infection, including work on a prosthetic hand with microsensors.
