Rogerius (physician)

Surgeons and Perioperative Specialists

Rogerius, also called Rogerius Salernitanus or Roger Frugard (before 1140 to about 1195), was a surgeon of the medical school of Salerno. Around 1180 he wrote Practica Chirurgiae, the Practice of Surgery, also known as Chirurgiae Magistri Rogerii. The work is clear, brief and practical, arranged anatomically, and gives a short recommended treatment for each affliction without long citations of earlier authorities. Rogerius is credited with being the first to use the term lupus for the classic malar rash. His text became the first medieval surgical work to dominate its field across Europe and was used in the new universities of Bologna and Montpellier, and his pupil Rolando da Parma issued a new edition in 1250.
