Surgeons and Perioperative Specialists

Walther Kausch (1867 to 1928) was a German surgeon, born in Königsberg and active in Breslau and Berlin, who contributed to the development of the pancreaticoduodenectomy. He studied medicine at Strassburg from 1885 to 1890, worked first in a psychiatric and neurological clinic and then in internal medicine under Bernhard Naunyn, and turned to surgery in 1896 at the Breslau university clinic under Jan Mikulicz-Radecki, whose daughter he married in 1903. After Mikulicz died he led the clinic in an acting capacity, and in 1905 he became medical director and head of the first surgical department of the Augusta-Viktoria-Krankenhaus in Berlin-Schöneberg, a post he held until his death in Berlin in 1928 from pulmonary emboli following a perforated appendix.
