The Red Cross movement is the international humanitarian network founded to care for the sick and wounded of war and, later, victims of disaster generally. It grew from Swiss businessman Henry Dunants account of the 1859 Battle of Solferino, whose account of the suffering he witnessed led to the founding of the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863 and the 1864 Geneva Convention that gave the movement its legal protection.
