American Cancer Society

American Cancer Society is a nationwide nonprofit organization in the United States dedicated to eliminating cancer, active in cancer research funding, public policy advocacy, patient education, and community support services. It publishes three medical journals, Cancer, CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, and Cancer Cytopathology, and has provided research grants to scientists including fifty three Nobel Prize laureates. Its National Cancer Information Center serves roughly one million callers a year, and in a recent fiscal year the organization directed just over half its spending to patient support and about a fifth to research. Originally based in New York City, it later became legally based in Atlanta, Georgia, and now operates through distributed regional offices rather than a single headquarters building.
