Bed rest, also called the rest cure, is a medical treatment in which a person lies in bed for most of the time in an attempt to cure an illness, as distinct from being confined to bed by a health impairment that physically prevents leaving it. The practice remains in use even though a 1999 systematic review found no benefit for any of the seventeen conditions it examined, and no proven benefit for any condition beyond what is imposed by the underlying symptoms themselves.
