Rebirthing, sometimes called rebirthing breathwork, is a therapeutic practice developed by Leonard Orr in the 1970s, intended to release suppressed traumatic childhood memories, particularly memories its practitioners believe are related to a person's own birth. Orr developed the technique after he said he re-experienced his own birth during a bathing session, and he came to believe that specific breathing exercises could help people recover and process memories supposedly repressed since infancy. There is no scientific evidence that people can actually remember being born, and by 2006 a survey of more than one hundred psychological experts concluded that rebirthing therapy had been discredited as a legitimate treatment, with memories that appear to surface during sessions considered false memories rather than genuine recollections.
