Primal therapy, also called primal scream therapy, is a trauma-focused psychotherapy developed by the psychologist Arthur Janov in the 1960s. It rests on the theory that neurosis is caused by the repressed pain of childhood trauma, and that patients can resolve their psychological problems by re-experiencing traumatic events from childhood and fully expressing the emotions that were originally suppressed at the time. The approach emphasizes reaching what Janov considered deeper, more primitive brain structures rather than relying only on intellectual discussion of a patient's problems.
