Electrotherapeutics is a general term for the use of electricity in treating disease, a category that later came to include treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Early accounts of the practice describe medical electrolysis, in which a drug solution is introduced into the body through electrodes, with the depth and area of treatment controlled by the placement of the electrodes and the strength of the current used.
