Mustard Bath

Historical and Premodern Treatment Practice

A mustard bath is a traditional remedy for tired or stressed muscles, colds, fevers, and seizures, in which mustard was believed to draw out toxins and warm the muscles, blood, and body. It was a standard medical practice into the early twentieth century and continues to be used in alternative medicine.
