Groote Schuur Hospital is a public teaching hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, affiliated with the University of Cape Town. Opened in 1938, it became internationally known in December 1967 as the site of the first human-to-human heart transplant in the world, performed by surgeon Christiaan Barnard. It remains a major referral hospital for the Western Cape region.
