Noise-induced hearing loss is hearing impairment that results from exposure to loud sound, which can cause loss of perception across a narrow range of frequencies or a broader reduction in hearing sensitivity, sometimes accompanied by ringing in the ears. When it results from noise exposure at work, it is specifically referred to as occupational hearing loss. Hearing can deteriorate gradually from chronic, repeated noise exposure, such as loud background noise over years, or suddenly from a single very loud impulse noise.
