Sunburn is a form of radiation burn that affects living tissue such as skin, resulting from overexposure to ultraviolet radiation, usually from the sun. Symptoms include red skin that is painful or hot to the touch, fatigue, dizziness, blistering, peeling, swelling, itching, and nausea, typically peaking 24 to 36 hours after exposure and improving within three to five days; nearly 75 percent of adolescents and young adults in the United States have experienced sunburn. Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation is a cause of melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.
